The Faith of Flexibility

Text:  Matthew 4:18-21

18 As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 19 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” 20 At once they left their nets and followed him.

21 Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, 22 and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him

Summary of The Faith of Flexibility

A seminary professor once said:  “I use to get upset when people would knock on my door, interrupting my work, until the day I recognized that all these interruptions were my work!”

 

This is a good lesson for those in the “traditional church” to remember. 

OUR GOAL:  To equip God’s people for ministry so that the message of the Kingdom of God – the message of grace – might be advanced.

There are many PATHS we can travel toward accomplished that goal, such as teaching, preaching, praying, visiting, encouraging, confronting, leading, following, initiating, waiting, striving, resting…etc.

But we must remember that the AIM/GOAL/PURPOSE of our ministry is NOT to teach, preach, pray, visit, encourage, confront, lead, follow, initiate, wait, strive, rest…or any of those sorts of things.  THESE ARE ALL WAYS – paths or trails/means & methods.  These are ways to reach the destination….but they are NOT the destination.

We become STUCK  when we think that our call is to teach, preach, pray, visit, encourage, confront, lead, follow, initiate, wait, etc…

We become FREED when we know that our destination is to become better equipped and more faithfully engaged in KINGDOM MINISTRY

We will become STUCK when…the destination is confused with the path

We will become STUCK when…what we are doing takes precedence over where we are going

We will become STUCK when…we become rigid, stiff, unyielding, immoveable, and inflexible

If we do not learn flexibility, it will be like driving with the brake engaged.
