Gross Theology

Sometimes we have some really Gross Theology – and it is fitting to say so.

In fact, Jesus is the author of some really Gross Theology

This sermon was preached at the Patterson Avenue Baptist Church on Sunday, September 2, 2012.  On this particular Sunday, I stood behind the table from which we celebrate Holy Communion.  We gather as a church around this table on the first Sunday of each month for a rather formal time of worship and reflection.  It’s usually pretty prim and proper…but on this Sunday the conversation at the table was really gross.

It wasn’t my fault, mind you…it all started with Jesus.

In the text I read from John 6, Jesus offers up some pretty scandelous imagery…some pretty GROSS THEOLOGY.

We’ve already heard Jesus say, “I am the resurrection and the life…”

We have heard Jesus say, “I am the way, the truth, and the life…”

We have heard Jesus say, “I am the light of the world…”

All these words of Jesus are already scandelous because in speaking those words, Jesus is making some pretty amazing and exclusive claims about himself.  But at least those words are not expressions of GROSS THEOLOGY.

But in the reading from John 6 for today, Jesus basically says…

“I am flesh to be consumed!”

“You need to drink my blood to have life!”

Is he talking about vampirism?  Is this the beginning of the “Zombie Apocalypse?”  Well of course not…that’s just silly!

But Jesus is using some really stunning words to get our attention and shock us out of our complacency to that we can really beging to get an idea of who he is and what he’s all about.
