What Are You Worth?

According to the U.S. Bureau of Chemistry and Soils, the typical human body is made up of the following chemicals:

• 65% Oxygen
• 18% Carbon
• 10% Hydrogen
• 3% Nitrogen
• 1.5% Calcium
• 1% Phosphorous
• 0.35% Potassium
• 0.25% Sulfur
• 0.15% Sodium
• 0.15% Chlorine
• 0.05% Magnesium
• 0.0004% Iron
• 0.00004% Iodine

In addition to the above, the typical human body also contains trace amounts of fluorine, silicon, manganese, zinc, copper, aluminum, and arsenic.

If you could put a dollar figure to the value of these chemicals, you and I would be worth about $5.00, give or take a few cents – about the cost of a slice of cheese pizza and a soft-drink at the corner pizza-joint.

That said – some people are evidently worth a bit more. A lock of Elvis Presley’s hair recently sold at auction for $20,000.00. Imagine what the whole corpse might be worth!

A new television has recently caught my attention. It looks at certain items that many of us might think mundane or even a tad bit grotesque and places a value on them. A dress worn by Princess Diane; a suit worth by Elvis; the taxidermy remains of Will Roger horse Trigger (which sold in a recent auction for $266,500.00 – say what?)

I guess what a person (or horse) is worth depends greatly on what somebody is willing to pay. Well, guess what? You are worth a heck of a lot more than the cost of a slice of pizza and a soda.

In the gospel of John, Jesus said: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.”

These words tells us something of the value our Triune God places on your life. Get this! It is the same value that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit place on that of the Son (Jesus). You are so valuable that the Holy Trinity was willing to lay down in death the human life of Jesus in order that we might be saved (caught up, included, adopted into the life of God). This was so much God’s aim that Paul writes (in Ephesians 1) that God planned out our salvation through Christ long before the world was created. In fact, it was “the Father’s good pleasure” to save us.

It was a terrific price to pay – but our Triune God was willing to pay it. Jesus paid for your life by sacrificing his own. He must have thought you were worth it.

I remember learning a song from my pastor Dixon Free when I was a teenager. It speaks of this price that God the Son paid for our redemption.

He paid a debt He did not owe,
I owed a debt I could not pay,
I needed someone to wash my sins away.
And now I sing a brand new song,
“Amazing Grace!”
Christ Jesus paid the debt that I could never pay.

One Response to “What Are You Worth?”

  1. Whe I was a teenage–a few years ago, at least–the chemicals in a human body priced at $1.67. Inflation! It hits everything. Thank the Lord’s grace is already infinite! Even if there could be more grace, it would already be ours in Christ. Praise Him!
